COMIC ADAPTATION

Comic artist Sascha Hommer used my book A Brief History of Meteorite Falls in a workshop in Helsinki as working material for his students. The 3 day workshop was based on the theme of Adaptation, and each student chose a text about a meteorite fall from the book to work with. How awesome is this?

This drawing on the 1869 Staunton meteorite fall was made during the workshop by Ella Eiranto:

DEUTSCHE BÖRSE ART COLLECTION

The topics represented in the collection are just as manifold as the generations of the artists included. Leading contemporary photographers such as Stephen Shore, Bernd and Hilla Becher and their students – among them Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, Thomas Ruff, Jörg Sasse and Axel Hütte – enter into a dialogue with the newer works of young photographic artists such as Pieter Hugo, Jessica Backhaus, Regine Petersen and Tobias Zielony. They are supplemented by extensive groups of works from documentary and reporting photography. The collection presents several works of each artist allowing the artist’s individual imagery to be fully appreciated.

MY FIRST METEORITE, HOLBROOK 03/2011

On the evening of July 19, 1912, a series of loud booming sounds followed by several explosions was heard over the sky in Navajo County, Arizona. The meteor passed due east over the town of Holbrook and it was witnessed as it exploded about a mile or two in the air. Thousands of stones, many of them pea sized, fell to the ground near the Aztec Rail Yard.

The fall was documented by W. M. Foote in his monograph Preliminary Note on the Shower of Meteoritic Stones at Aztec, near Holbrook, Navajo County, Arizona
